The best antivirus and spyware is yourself. seriously. if you know what you are doing on the net you dont need neither. I have been running without virus or spyware protection for little over 2 years now, and have never encountered a problem.

Norton makes a 1000 euro PC work like a 600 euro PC... IMO NOD32 is the best... Doesn't use many resources, excellent anti-virus protection, updates...
#5 ftw :D I have an AV and Spyware (AdAware/Spybot) and I only use them AT MOST once every 6 months. You just gotta be smart about what you do on the internet. If you don't know what's good and bad, then go with the recommendations everyone has offered you. Good luck with your search.
i only use Search and destroy cause spyware just always creeps up on you, as for antivirus i don't really see it all that useful, plus if a new virus comes out today, and they only have a patch for it tommorrow, you comp could still crap out.
#25, firefox is a browser and AVG and zonealarm work by themselves. having those other three shortcuts next to each other in my quicklaunch is very taxing, believe me. it's very hard to keep them straight. sometimes i wish my mom would come over and help me get through the complicated task of running those three programs every now and again.
#5 I completely agree with you. Unfortunately some of us have to share our computer with siblings. In my case it's two younger sisters who know next to nothing about computers and will click on whatever they want, which is why I use a firewall/virus protection.
To the ones who think their pc is free of spyware, and therefore not having any anti spyware, you're wrong. When I browse gotfrag after a full clean I always get spyware back. You don't just get it from stupid ads.
honestly...porn sites aren't "bad" if they're the ones you have to pay for...they're just like normal sites, except with videos on them. the videos happen to contain hot chix gettin' railed. doesn't mean there's automatically spyware. a professional video company (vivid dot com) wouldn't have spyware crap like that
NOD 32 got better ratings in detection over Norton and McFee being that they are the majot players in the AV game.
NOD is so fast it loads fast on windows start up, it detects viruses before they even execute themselfs, i go to crack websites with NOD and it lets me delete the crap they send to you and i get my cracks and come out without a virus.
i guess people think that not going to sites that may download things to your PC like #5 said is the solution he is wrong, viruses dont always come from sites, they come from exploits, bad coded programs, emails, downloads like music where trojans like sub7 can piggy back easily. its like not having a spare tire in your car because you KNOW nothing will happen to your other 4 tires its just stupid.
i bet #5 PC has major problem with adware and other programs and he thinks he is sooooo computer leet that he dont think its efecting him.

bit defender 9 is supposed to beat all the other anti-virus programs and the program itself has firewall, spyware/malware, ani-virus, the program updates itself every 2-3 hours. Its a pretty cool program.

For spyware I use Adaware SE and Spybot and a like ewido as a monthly check.
Hijack this is also good to use to clear out a lot of junk
And as far as #5 and #12 go: Do you not go to the doctor/dentist just because you feel fine or do you get a checkup "just in case"
