We have see the buying power increase significantly since our last update. Especially in the CPU department. Almost every CPU was upgraded without spending much more if not less than the last guide. Thank Intel and AMD for such great price cuts.
We have changed some other component selections as well to get the best performance we could.
Was wondering when these would be updated. Hooray!
Edit:
Upon viewing the Intel high-end, why not simply add the Hitachi to the Raptor? Also, the "Suggested Upgraded PSU" needs a quick fix :D
And I know you guys already do a lot, but would it be in the realm of possibility to get a write-up with justifications and such in future price guides?
ahh nice on the midrange intel system, the ds3 shown doesnt support 1333mhz fsb also, the motherboard in the high end amd doesnt make much sense. if you click it, it takes you to the 6000+ on newegg, they only have 580 AMD asus'es, and they are crossfire, not sli.
#2 we are planning to implement a little write-up for each system in the next refresh, and of course each refresh thereafter.
#3 the rev 3.3 965P-DS3 board DOES support 1333MHz FSB, but unfortunately newegg does not specify the revision for the board listed. We have changed this selection accordingly. We have fixed the link screw up that you mentioned as well. Lastly, I don't know what you are talking about in regards to "580 AMD asus'es"
#5 we did not use those processors because the price jump to the ones we selected were minimal when considering performance boosts and more recent technology.
#7, as of this second the E6850 is a better gaming CPU simply due to the higher clock speeds. Since there are no multi-threaded games quite yet, the Q6600 essentially operates at 2.4GHz just like the E6600 with no real benefit while gaming (unless you are running many other things in the background, but this is a gaming-oriented site =p ). When Valve drops their Source update (Including HL2:Ep2 and TFC2) on October 9, a day that we have been waiting for for 2 years, you will see all of this change.
The PSU works fine, and ive heard good things about. Whats the problem with it? Ive seen people even run SLI with that Corsair 620, so its just a suggestion.
As far as the hard drive. That is just the way I chose to insert it. Some people may have no use for both, nor want to spend the money on both. But this way they at least see another option to chose from. They can always "add" it themselves to the raptor build if they want. Its just suggestions.
i still think the Intel quad core q6600 should be up there :S i mean shouldnt 4 cores run faster than 2? andd wouldnt 4 cores hold more stable than 2 cores in intense gaming situations
If this were made by me two months from now, like shoes mentioned about the Source update, the q6600 would be a given. If i were building that machine for myself, id use the q6600. But thats why its an option, because it can really go either way. Future proofing, or the best performance a dual core has to offer.
overall i think the suggested components are a great starting point for most people... nice guide.
for the intel setups i'd personally prefer something more like the abit ip35 pro instead of the msi, but thats personally pref.
the only thing i guess i dont understand is why you'd recommend ram over ddr2-800 for the 6750/6850 builds since most everyone is going to just do 1:1 @ 400fsb or so (and maybe a little higher). while i understand you could get some lower latencies with the faster memory, even ddr2-667 will saturate the 1333mhz bus @ stock speeds... and with fairly low latency 2 x 1gb ddr2-800 sticks like the following @ under $80 AR, you can't really beat it: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDeta..
Most games don't support multithreading, thats why quad cores are no different from other cpus while gaming unless your running a lot of programs in the backround.
Ya people will look at the Price Guides and post the build and we will tell them what we think. If GotFrag had the best Price Guide and everyone thought it was perfect people would still post the build they are looking at getting. GotFrag Nice Price Guide!!!!
Thanks LeadGift. You would be surprised at the amount of time that goes in to making them. They may never be perfect for everyone, but we hope to get close to home for most people.
I'd reconsider the motherboard choice for the Intel mid-range price. I'd much rather have a Gigabyte DS3R or an Asus P5K. It would even save some cash. ($30-40)
wow big error on the mid range price guide. http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/PriceG.. It shows a mobo that doesn't have a AGP slot at all and it tells people to get a AGP video card
#28. The 2nd was a optional upgrade, and if you chose to use sli cards, obviously you would need a different mobo, i just didnt get around to picking one out.
#27 nice pick up, i was rushing trying to find the best value for the 1950, and slipped up and picked out a agp card. Ill get around to fixing it in the next update.
#30 Expect a complete overhaul in the next iteration of our Price Guides. With AMD price cuts coming this Monday and X38 motherboards slowly trickling out be on the lookout for that update.
can some1 help me out a bit, out of these boards which one is best ( i will be using q6600 with 2gb 800mhz ram) 1. ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 2. ASUS P5K-VM LGA 775 Intel G33 Micro 3. GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 or would u suggest any other around 100$ help me out plz

Why not use the least expensive CPUs for the budget build? The E4300 and X2 3800+ are both decent processors and are a hell of a deal.

#9 hi, you are pretty.
Why was the Hitachi swapped with the Raptor instead of simply adding it on? And the suggested PSU thing :)

If you didnt realize, this was a bit old. :)
We have been waiting for some of the recent hardware to update this.
1. ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35

3. GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35
