My current beast has:

AMD 64 3200+
512mb PC3200
BFG 6600GT 128mb
seagate 200gb 16mb cache

im wondering if upgrading to 1gb of ram(not dual channel just replacing this stick with a new one) is worth 40$, im pretty sure the extra ram will help because im always running atleast 10 programs or etc, but without it being dual channeled and stuff i didnt know if i really needed over 512. oh and im trying to make this system last me as long as possible as im not playing crysis or fear lol.

oh and can i mix and match ram because if i can ill have 1.5gb

yes 1 gig of ram will help, but i would really buy 2 if i were you, and invest in a dual core CPU if you really don't want to buy a whole new pc.

what socket is your mobo. What I did with a system similar to yours was I just bought a dual core opteron and stuck it in my 939 mobo. you can get socket 939 dual cores for about 120. that and some more ram would cost you around 200 and you can get another year or so out of your computer. that is if 1.6 is the only game you play. The 6600 is going to be the biggest hindrance after you upgrade ram and the CPU.

i did the exact same thing as #4, i put in an Opteron 180 and overclocked it by 400mhz to 2.8ghz with 2 gig of ram and a soon to be Evga 8800GTS 512mb, ill be set for 1-2 years.

I also overclocked mine. I have a 7900GT and i really only play HL1 based games, Starcraft, and occasionally COD4 and UT3. It saved me from buying a new computer. I really dont play game that much anymore so the performance is midrange and it doesnt bother me one bit.

#2, thats DDR2, #1 has DDR.

If you can, get 2GBs overall. If not, use 1.5GB. As long as you get DDR PC3200 you'll be fine.

#4 and #5 have good posts. I had an old 939 system till recently, with nearly exactly the same specs as yours - except a 256MB 6600GT.

What games do you play?

If you want to play new games, and if your motherboard is AGP, don't bother upgrading any more. Get a cheap system (like mine - E2160 OCed to 3ghz, 2GB RAM, 9600GT etc. for £425), but if you only play 1.6 and similar games then just hold onto your rig as long as you can (buy the RAM), and save up.

well i have a socket 754 mobo (no dual channel ram with this one) and AGP 8x (no PCI-E) so the only option i have is getting more ram or building a totally new system, i guess ill get more ram and see what my comp can handle

What games do you play. Your only really viable solution with that computer is to upgrade ram. If you are looking for more fps in games ram wont help you. If you are looking for faster multi tasking then ram can help.

my brother was in the same boat as you, only he had a pci express slot. For xmas i upgraded him with:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..

he used all the other things in his previous computer and that made a cheap upgrade that gets the job done. I overclocked the CPU from 1.8 to 2.9 GHZ on the stock cooler.

You would obviously need a pci express video card, but you can get a cheap one to get you started.

I have pretty much the same build as #10, but an E2160 and 9600GT. It's worth looking into if you can afford it.

Well I have this:

AMD 78.2 32000++
2,052mb PC2.0
KFC 3.1415GT 215 TB
seegait 0gb 10kb cash

I was considering upgrading the gigadoodle to support the TPS software, but then I wouldn't be able to run DoD:S because I'd have to sacrifice by ABC123 video card and we all know what means: unprotected computer. Viruses would be running wild, and to get the correct virus protection I'd need to get the Microsoft XP professional double secret version, and then I'd update my ram to support the Euro monetary system, too. It'd run me about 50,000 yen, but it's probably worth it.
