Hey, I made a post on here not too long ago about upgrading my computer. I decided to get a completely new one, so my parts are as follows:

Intel quadcore processor X6600 (i think) @ 2.4 GHz/core
2gb corsair
nvidia geforce 8400 gs
mobo (not sure of the name, it's good though, believe me)

my problem is that in 1.6, I get 100fps constant, but when i look/run in smokes my fps decreases. In source, i get a max of 50 fps, maybe 51-60 in low end areas.. I basically got better fps than this in Source with my old pc (intel 3.4 GHz single core, nvidia 6800, 1gb ram).. So it really makes no sense. I'll list what i've done already so you know what i've tried.

-Reforce (locking refresh rate at 75)
-Vsync is off!
-Newest nvidia drivers installed
-Refresh rate is at 75 (max for my BenQ FP49VW 22" LCD - same monitor i had w/ old pc)

Any help? I'm thinking there may be a problem with my CPU and it's only using 1 core @ 2.4ghz.. if so, how do i change it to have all 4 cores running. And if that isn't it, what is the real problem? please help asap, thanks :]

The problem is your GPU, get a better one. If your on that tight of a budget get an Evga 8800GS its like 110. But you have to loose the 8400GS, its not good and its the reason you have terrible fps.

Also, for 1.6 you should try setting the CPU affinity to 1 core.

How would it be my graphics card? 8400 GS is better than 6800 , right? So Why would I get better fps in source/1.6 with my 6800 w/ 1gb ram and 3.4 GHz single core, compared to the 8400 gs w/ 2.4 ghz quad core & 2gb ram ?

Dude, the 8400 GS is a $35 graphics card and is intended more for business/general use. You need to: http://youtube.com/watch?v=4Bnr_5DuFpU

As #8 stated, the 8400GS is a general use card, not meant for gaming. You should have stuck with the 6800GT, until you could buy atleast an 8800GS.

about your core question... did you use the same hard drive (and windows install) from your old PC? Did you reinstall windows? That could be the problem. Do a repair install if you haven't already, you won't lose any files.

do ctrl+alt+del then go to performance and see how many charts you have under 'CPU Usage History'. Should be 4 if you have a quadcore, however you called it the 'X6600', which doesnt exist. There's a E6600 (dual core) or Q6600 (quad core).

either card from #11 or #12 will do.
