Just ordered the eVGA 8800GT Superclocked (650core) and it didn't boot in my pc.

my specs:
shuttle sn25p
amd64 x2 4800
2gb ocz pc-3200

on my previous 7800gt i used a separate power supply from an extra tower that i was using to power only my video card to make sure it had enough juice. i think it's a 300-350W.

evga says the 8800gt requires 400W minimum. my question is, would my computer at least boot to bios without the proper power going to the card?

if i use my 7800gt without the extra PSU on it, it will still boot. i just get a notice saying my card wont perform optimally etc. etc....however, my computer wont even boot on nor will the external PSU power up when i use the new 8800gt.

so i'm wondering...is my 8800gt busted (b/c it wont boot at all) or do i REALLY need 400W to make it even work and boot my pc?

thx in advance.

well mr. smarty pants.

my 7800gt requires 350W...if i only use my shuttle PSU (300W) the video card will still boot my computer to the desktop.

so my questions remains, does my 8800gt require 400w to boot to desktop? if it does not, then my conclusion would be the card sent to me is busted. if it wont boot at all then i will try a more powerful psu. get it smarty pants?

Try a more powerful PSU, one with the correct connectors. If that doesn't work, then you'll know it's the card.

I have the same card as you, but I have a 1000W PSU, so I can't relate to what's actually required as a minimum.

ya that's my plan as of now...but if i can determine what i'm asking then i'll know whether or not to waste my time picking up a new PSU or to just hurry up and RMA (love newegg)

but ty #4, i'm leaning towards hitting up the Fry's on the way home from work

I dont see why it wouldn't at least boot with out sufficient power, but yah pick up a 650+ power supply somewhere.

it's not all about the wattage with an 8800, you also have to have adequate amps on your 12 volt rails, its like 24 or more.

The 8800 takes a lot of power. 350w is definitely not enough.

7800GT does not compare to the 8800GT

550 W will be more than enough for a 8800GT and your build

i went to Fry's and bought the Antec Neo HE550

that should be able to power a single 8800gt....? but the card still doesn't power up. so i guess it's just DOA :(

yes it is DOA, those requirements most of the time are exagerated, i can run a core2duo and 8800gt 512 with a fortron 350watts, plays any game flawfless
just do the rma ...

shuttle's can upgrade their psu to a 450w, its on new egg for like 99$, but if i were you, i'd just buy these two:

together they'll be around 180$, and its worth it, better motherboard and a better case with a 500w psu

i didn't see you have AMD, seriously get what i have above and get an Intel Core 2 Duo, that motherboard supports intel. AMD sucks right now.

well appreciated #15-16 but i'm not looking to completely upgrade my setup. i just wanted to toss in the 8800gt b/c it fits in my shuttle.

sure both of those together for 180$ isn't bad...but i have pc3200 ram, i would need to get new DDR2 ram + the new CPU...more $money$

when i do fully upgrade i'm looking to SLI... and that SSF doesn't have two pci-e slots :)

sounds DoA, but it could've just been you hadnt inserted it all the way. its a very long card and in a small case like a shuttle, seating it properly could be a pain in the ass.

it will run on a low watt power supply, but the stress it's gonna put on the PSU will likely cause failure later on.
