Depends on what you need the notebook for. Portable pc for classes and such or just a desktop replacement?
I have a 17" right now and wish I would have gotten a smaller one. It's 8lbs or so and gets hot when using it on my lap.
I would recommend getting an Asus EEE 900 for portable non-gaming stuff and a desktop for gaming. Because games will continue to get exponentially more and more system-intensive and it'll leave notebooks in the dust and whereas you could upgrade your desktop fairly easily, your notebook would just be a sad reminder of buyer's remorse every day.
Non-gaming stuff shouldn't get more system-intensive as long as the public doesn't fall for stupid sh*t like Vista. Thank you public, for that one.

I just bought the Gateway M-6850FX laptop ... I absolutely love it, 3 gbs ram, 1.8 intel centrino dual core, 512mb Radeon HD 2600 ... made for gaming and I can play source at 60-80 constant without any fps config or changes to settings
also, this laptop is abnormally cool in temperature ... the one exhaust fan on the side blows very hot air, but this keeps the phisical temp very low and I have had no problems even while playing intense games for hours on end
dont get hp laptops if you gonna play stuffs like CS because if you play for long hours the heat just becomes unbearable. my laptop lost it's original shape because of the extreme heat.
true gaming laptop is the way to go.
and if you plan on plugging in usb keyboards, they won't work for gaming because you'll only be able to hit one key at a time
