To kind of continue an old thread would you say the following is a good 400$ upgrade? my cpu is currently overheating like crazy (replaced fans, thermalpaste, etc..) so i want to get a new mobo ram & cpu, and keep my old stuff ( 3 150gig hds, cdrom, tower/psu, and 6800 vc,) do you think the following would be good for my money, or should i change it up anywhere?

Why is your cpu overheating? Are you overclocking it, or any other part of your computer?

If your running everything at stock, as long as there is decent ventilation, overheating is rarely a problem.

What kind of PSU are you using, and is it perhaps underpowered to run your setup... and what kind of processor is it?

As for your upgrades, they all look good to me. I am just curious what your currently running, as it seems a bit ridiculous to change components just because your system is overheating.

ewiz.com for the CPU and MOBO is $313 instead of $336 from Newegg.

Then the ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..

Those are a nice choice in upgrades. Make sure you have good ventilation in your case, as #2 said stock clocks and overheating isn't normal.

im assuming its overheating because of the cpu. it's not overclocked and i already replaced the heatsink and added new fans. it came to the point where i have my cased opened up now and a real fan pointed on it, and when i play games (such as 1.6 lol..) i can put my finger on the heatsink and feel it extremely hot. (thats how i can tell its the cpu, i can usually tell if its going to shutoff by how hot it is now)

PSU i was using a 480 and i brought it to my computer friend, and he replaced it with a stronger one saying i needed more power and he gave me a new one (not sure of the brand).
processor is AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle 2.4GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Single-Core Processor . they stopped making socket 754 for this processor within a month, and in that month i happened to buy one. so i pretty much need a complete upgrade since my mobo is 754 also.

cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..
mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..
ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp..

i also upgraded to a nasty heatsink, and got some AS5, and no help.

A hot heatsink isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just means it's doing it's job ;]

That said, if you're running a single core 3400, and you have the money, now is probably as good of time as any to upgrade.

Good luck!

I have those exact components so I guess I should help.

Press DEL when you bootup, this will bring you to the BIOS menu.

Scroll down to "MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.)" and press enter.

Set "System Voltage Control" to manual, then go to "DDR2 Overvoltage Control" and select "(+0.1V)", which will increase the default setting of 1.8V to 1.9V.

you're talking about keeping your graphics card (the 6800) - is it AGP or PCI-E? can't remember what most socket 754 boards were.

also, if you want an overall better PC, maybe you should consider upgrading graphics card too. You could get an e4*** series, and a 3850 for example. Look at the prices, shouldn't be too bad.
