Hi gotfrag. I'm building a new PC but since im relatively new to creating a "good" gaming build, It would be great if you guys could help me out. I can get parts dirt cheap, so I got to put a little bit extra parts like ram and dual 9600's which I think will make the PC run better. I also have a friend who's going to help me OC which is the reason im using water cooling. Please gimmie some suggestions! Oh and If you guys could tell me if the Q9450 beats the Intel E8500 dual core processor in terms of future gaming(for example If i ever want to play games which support quad) and overall gaming power I would really appreciate it.
Processor - Core 2 Quad processor Q9450 Audio - Creative FB X-fi Xtreme gamer card Optical - PIONEER DVD 20X WRITER Power supply - Antec true power trio 650 Watt Hard Drive - Seagate 500 GB 7.2k rpm 16mb cache Memory-OCZ 8GB (4x2GB) 800 mhz DDR2 Graphic Card-Dual EVGA Nforce 9600gt 512mb SSC edition in sli Ethernet,TrendnetGigabit OS-Vista Premium home 64-Bit Case-Antec 900 Chassis Cooling-Thermaltake big water liquid cooling Chipset-Nvidia nForce 780i SLI Motherboard-ASUS MOTHERBOARD LGA 775 NFORCE 780i
Im not a big fan of vista but maybe you are. As for your cooling Im also not a big fan of liquid cooling. Also you are going to get 8gb or ram and a 9600? Go with corsair instead of OCZ and get a better card than the 9600GT. If you want to stay in the price range of the 9600GT get an 8800 GT or 8800 GTS. You could even just up that to a 9800 if you want / have the cash.
Alright i'll take both idea's into consideration although im not sure if having a zx HD4850 will have a major impact in comparison to dual 9600's...or will it? As for going with corsair instead of OCZ I just might do that.
I would go just 1 GTX280, kick the ass of just about any GPU (even dual 9600's) mobo, i suggest you dont go with ASUS due to i have heard alot of bad things about there boards and customer service. I preference would be XFX or EVGA, to of the best brands on the market. Also with evga they have a life time warrenty on most of there products. Liquid cooling sounds like a bit of an ova kill with what your getting (unless your planing to OC the hell out of it) but yea id go zalman 9700 or maxi orb. Also i currently have the antec 900 and its a pretty tight case i ahve 2x 9800gtx's, evga 750iftw mobo and blue orb and thats all pretty tight. I suggest the CM stacker 830, the TT armor+ with ESA built-in, which will really help if you get the 780i esa ready mobo (again id go xfx and evga for mobo) also lol maybe get 850 watt PSU.
so the build i suggest is,
Processor - Core 2 Quad processor Q9450 Audio - Creative FB X-fi Xtreme gamer card Optical - PIONEER DVD 20X WRITER Power supply - Antec true power 850Watt Hard Drive - Seagate 500 GB 7.2k rpm 16mb cache Memory-OCZ 8GB (4x2GB) 800 mhz DDR2 Graphic Card-evga or XFX GTX280 Ethernet,TrendnetGigabit OS-Vista Premium home 64-Bit Case-TT ARMOR+ Cooling-Thermaltake big water liquid cooling Motherboard- XKX-EVGA 780i
Also i would agree with median im not a big fan of vista either, i would go xp pro. But its up to you.
Thanks a lot sub. That's actually a pretty solid build and I defiantly might use that for my build. As for vista/xp, i think I'm going to stick with vista :P From my experience with it its pretty reliable.
The GTX280 is a aawwesome card, im planning to get 1 very soon and it bets the ATI 4870 on crysis (which is the benchmarking game for most new GPU's) with both everything high running on 2560x1600, even tho the ati card has GDDR5. Now a couple of other things i would suggest, if you want a extreme system your on your way, if you have the money this is "exxxxtreme system" i suggest,
Case: Lian-li PC-80 CPU: Intel CORE 2 EXTREME QX9650 Mobo: XFX 790i GPU: 2x GTX280(either evga or xfx, you can get a evga gtx280 with a water block pre-installed) RAM: Corsair Dual Channel 2048MB DDR3 Cooling: Thermaltake big water liquid cooling HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive + Seagate 500 GB 7.2k rpm 16mb cache PSU: Ultra X3 1000-Watt (modular =D) OS: Dual boot, XP PRO + VISTA SC: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Fatality Platinum LCD: Samsung 2493HM 24" LCD Monitor (HDMI)
and also i would get some neons and so on to make it look really awesome lol. But yea this is the comp i plan to build in the near future, it is gonna cost a bit but if money is not a prob do go this lol.
Get HD4870 or wait for HD4870x2, I do not recommend getting a HD4850 unless you will play ok graphic games like CS:S.
FYI: HD4870x2 has 2GB GDDR5 RAM :)
DO NOT GO nVidia.
They have lowered their price of GTX 280 from $649.99 to $499.99 because ATi kicked their asses with new cheapass HD4 series cards. Some said that nV will lower the price of GTX 280 to $280 dollars so DO NOT GO nVidia.
Get Asus Rampage Formula if you want to crossfire Don't get a P35, get X38/48 series for more PCI-E bandwith, new cards like HD4 series will need that or it will have bottlenecks. Get Q6600 or Q9450, Q6600 will have little bottleneck with HD4870x2. And you don't need 8GB for gaming now, 4GB is way enough unless you do lots of processing stuff, save it for something else.
8 GIG yea its a bit of an over kill, but if he wants to have 8 then go for it. I wouldn't suggest getting 8 norm just get 2x2gig sticks running at 1066 MHz but yea. And I agree with pNeu the GTX280 wont drop probably anytime soon but it does greater performance over the Ati cards.
In short if your looking to save a bit of money do go with the ATI card, it is a fantastic card for the price, but if you have the money i suggest do go with Nvidia.
As i said the 280 BEATS the 4870 in crysis with rez on 2560x1600 and everything on very high, the 280 beats the 4850 by 4-8 frames which may not seem alot but its a fair bit.
So, a quick question for someone, and sorry if its a no brainer, but is there a big performance hit running an ATI card on an NVidia 780i series board? Obviously not crossfire, just one ATI card. And for someone who actually knows their hardware well, whats a good Crossfire mobo?
(sorry #1, I know this is your post, but uhhh, maybe this will help you, Im looking at upgrading myself too :)
FulmeR Biatch!

Gl Sub.
xp pro is total garbage.
and vista is... >_<

SUb
Antec 900 or Coolermaster 690
StealthXStream 650w
DFI Lanparty P35 (or Blood Iron version)
HD4850 or 4870
Intel E8400 or Q6600
ZEROTherm Nirvana CPU Cooler
(Coolermaster 120mm Fans) x 4
Seagate Barracuda 250GB
(OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066) x 2
Arctic Cooling MX-2
Keep in mind that OCZ sets the RAM at 667 for board compatibility, you have to increase the voltage to 2.1 to get 1066mhz, It's no biggie.
