Right now, Vista SP1 is still said to transfer files and run apps slower, but gaming differences are negligible with Vista SP1 actually being slightly faster now. What are your guys take on this? Is it worthwhile to switch to Vista SP1 or would you still wait for drivers to mature even more?

Doesn't matter benchmarks are very close. If you have XP I wouldn't buy Vista and just wait for some better technology to come out thats worth droping the coin on. If on the other hand you wanting to run 4gb of ram or above I would suggest Vista64 because its better than the XP flavor.
I'm running XP Sp3 right now with a custom build I made with http://www.nliteos.com/ Most the services turned off and other Microsoft crap they throw in for casuals Runs great I like it better than Vista. I tried vista it wasn't a bad experience but not mind blowing enough to make me want to stay.
Till I have something I really want to play with DX10 turned on I'll stick with XP. Sorry to say but I Think game consoles are lagging this transition because of the older dx9 hardware most developers aren't wanting to jump on dx10 yet because it would just cost more money to develop for both. Hopefully we will have DX11 out before the next consoles are released so we can just skip DX10 altogether and won't have the lag issues on games as we are now.
after using XP Pro for years, and switching back and forth btwn. Vista and XP lately, Vista is finally kicking off and I'm starting to enjoy it :-D My opinion however :-X
and #8 don't blame consoles for delaying DX22 and the GeForce 5500029GTXGSOCSUPERCLOCKED, consoles are the butter to your bread.
Depends solely on what you want from your operating system.
If you have a low-mid range system i'd suggest sticking with XP SP3, less overheads on XP than on vista.
If you are running a high end system (9800GX2 and above) you wont notice the performence loss if you run vista (you'll be able to SEE it but only getting 200 fps in a game instead of 230 isnt going to cause you any problems).
Most high end systems have 4GB+ of RAM so Vista 64 would be recommended, XP64 has dire driver support.
Another thing to take into consideration is ATi seem to retain performence better on vista than nVidia, Vista has an absolutely awful SLI scaling for games, XP is much better for SLI.
I'm yet to hear of any issues with Crossfire on vista... will update post if i hear something
Installed vista x64 recently driver support was fine for me and I haven't noticed any performance decreases as of yet but of course it is not the same for everyone.
vista phailed.....i mean hardcore. using xp pro sp3 right now, i have win 7 rc installed on my computer too, i use it some time, its a lot better than vista, plust win 7 offers xp mode, which is super duber cool. will use xp til win7 comes out(later this year)

because i am about to buy that new PC with 8gb of ram...
isn't XPSP3 suppose to fix the block?
or will i have to go 64bits ?
thats it.
XP all the way.
Most people simply saying "XP > Vista" most likely have never tried Vista.
