So I decided to go with the Fatal1ty Titanium Professional. Headset wise I have the Barracuda A-1 which worked well with my onboard. For music it is solid. Every sound is deep and crisp. For CS:S I am having an issue.
The sound I get when playing CS:S seems muffled (maybe too much bass?). I can hear footsteps a bit better, but localization does not always seem great. I have tried both headset and 2 speakers settings. 2 speakers seems to produce better sound, but still not amazing sound.
Also sometimes the sound seems to "fade" to the background. I first noticed this when playing music. When not much sound noise was going on in game my music sounded louder, but sounded softer if someone was running/shooting. It was a noticeable difference in the volume. BUT when I was not playing music, the sound still seems to "fade" sometimes. It is almost like the sound is trying to equalize.
I have tried changing several of the settings, but maybe I am not getting the right combination. I have tried playing with crystalization off, at 100%, and 50%. Changing the EQ settings between acoustic, rock, new age, and flat.
My only three major problems (in game) are the extreme bass sometimes, localization, and the "fade".
Any suggestions are welcome. I will give anything a shot. I am new to the sound card scene (always used onboard minus one cheap $20 sound card) so anything basic might be news to me.
I've read with that headset you don't put it on 5.1 you put it on like quad I think...... I used to have the headset... but they broke... cheap ass razer headset.
in the windows speaker settings for treble and bass put the bass a little down and the treble a little bit up....both in the middle makes it sound muffled imo.
i bought nice plantronics headset and found out it has some built in bass or w/e. exchanged it and purchased 30$ logitech non gamin headset and i hear footsteps flawlessly

Perhaps someone here has a setup or fix that can work well for you.
sennheiser=best directional sound imo
by the sound of this, seems like you might have it on entertainment mode or audio creation mode. do you have it switched to gaming mode?
my settings are basically default and the sound is....drool
grado are excellent even the budget range starting at 80 pounds.
my headset is abit more then that, i have grado sr-1`s. but i use mine for alot more then just playing games.
im on sr80's but i'm broke as hell.
Take it your a bit of an audiophile? =D
Wouldn't say Sennys are dire..... the 595's and 650's sound alright from anytime i listened to them. (:
