I'm looking to buy a new video card that can run source on high settings and run at 300 constant fps for a fair price. Help me out. Thank you. I currently have a 7600GS.
9800 gtx is better then the 8800gt. Don't be a nvidia fanboy trust me switch to ati 4580. Its currently the best card on the market/performance. You will prob never get 300 fps constant in source. So dont waste your money unless unless ur stupid, just go for the 4850.
Lol icon a NVIDIA 8800gt will normally get you about 400 fps on any map in css. I have a 9800gtx and i get about 300-500 fps on any map.. never drops lower then 250. OH and ait cards still chug ass compared to nvidia.. maybe when ati get there S**T together they might beat nvidia. The 4870 has about the same performance of a GTX260 maybe a little more but not enough to make a diff. So GTX280's mm rip ati.
You don't even need to drop loads of cash for a graphics card that rapes. There are so many rebates going down for graphics cards at fry's. It's ridiculous.
I have tested pretty much every single card on the market, and I can tell you that for the price there is currently no better option than the Radeon HD4850 from ATI.
The performance and image quality you get out of that thing is mind-boggling.
AMD/ATI is hanging on by their finger nails, and that's only because they've knocked their prices to try and compete with nVidia. It's much the same way the PS3 had to be dropped to stay competitive.
Unless AMD/ATI manages to produce some impressive technology for the next generation, they'll be in pretty big trouble. And that says nothing of AMDs poor performance vs. Intel.
#25, you obviously haven't spent some time up close with the HD48** series Gpus, or read the 8 million posts on this and other forums about the cards. I have a 9800GX2 sitting in it's box ever since I've given the HD4870 a try. Framerates in COD4 aren't quite up with the GX2, but they're very good (300-400 fps with a fps-geared config), and the card is much better in terms of image quality than Nvidia, and provides smoother output on the monitor, at least in COD4, which doesn't seem to like Nvidia in my personal experience (7600GT, 8800GTS G92, 9800GX2 obviously).
The drivers are pretty good actually, some things could be better, but very much on a par with Nvidia. I do recommend flashing the card with Asus "Top" bios, as that bio's fan settings will cool the card better. I also would advise to watch your gpu overclocks, as even though your temps might be in line, your games might crash because they don't like your settings. That goes for both Nvidia and ATI.
In terms of AMD processors, I'm no great fan, but I'll tell you, Intel Platforms are much more stable than Nvidia, although they are not quite as fast. I'll take the trade off to not have to muck around with it, how about you? And guess what, the Intel boards work great with ATI cards and Crossfire. I'll take a X48 Crossfired over any Nvidia board/gpu combination any day of the week, dollars and cents quite aside.
Nvidia needs to watch it. The reality is, they were forced to drop prices, because ATI smoked them out of the gates this round. Their drivers are coming around, and they definitely have the edge in image quality as a whole.
keep your 7600 and get a new processor.... e8400 FTW. Source is processor dependant, if you keep your quadcore and switch your gfx card, you wont see much of a difference...

video card
HD4850 is a great card... but source is also cpu dependent..

That 1200$ will buy you a new computer when you need one, smart ass.
You also need a good processor, 1kw PSU etc... 3-way SLi is definitely not worth it.
#10 was right bout the setup.

This will work fine and it's cheap in my opinion. Just bought it today :-)
I would upgrade to a proc like q6600 and OC it to hell.
...you're an idiot.
