1.6 freezes with my new comp

Hi guys,
I just recently bought a new computer to play counter strike 1.6, but bought moderately high-end parts because I wanted to play other games as well. I'm mainly a 1.6 player but for some reason, cs freezes randomly with looping sounds once in awhile. Sometimes it occurs every 5 min (lasts about 15 seconds) and sometimes it happens once every 30 mins.

If I alt-tab and tab back in, the game would run smoothly once again. I thought at first it was my video card, so i downgraded from a Nvidia 9800GT to a 8800GT. No luck though. Ill post my specs and hopefully someone can help me out.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.85GHZ
4 Gigs OCZ RAM
ASUS P5Q Mobo
Nvidia 8800GT
500W PSU (with my antec sonata case)

any help would be appreciated!

hmm after looking at ur specs it could be a PSU thing, but i honestly doubt it. update ur video drivers and stuff like that
Intel e6750 / Asus p5k / 2GB Patriot / 8800 gts 640 / 250GB / Antec 900 Case / Corsair hx520 PSU

thanks for replying,
i have the most recent nvidia drivers, the only chipset drivers i can find (from my mobo cd), updated bios.
i was thinking it might be a power supply issue too, but am kinda unsure (wanted other opinions first)

I had this issue, and though you didn't post 2 video cards (so I doubt you run in SLI mode), I had to disable SLI mode for 1.6 to run smooth. All of the 8xxx cards and up have issues with their drivers and older games when running in SLI mode. Also, don't use the 175,19 set, use the 175,16 or even earlier. You list 4 GB of ram so you are running in 64 bit windows? The OS would help knowing because 32 bit windows won't utilize your full RAM if over 3.5 GB :( Here's a link to the older nvidia drivers though! Hope it helps!

lol what a waste of money

you're right, i dont run on SLI mode and yes i am using 32bit so my OS only recognizes 3.25gb of ram. I have tried older drivers and even omega drivers but things don't seem to be working out.

I'm starting to think its my power supply, because i've tried using PSU calculators such as the one from newegg, and it tells me i should have around 585W, and although they don't have an option to select my video card, my wattage should be somewhere around there.

any opinions?

Try enabling extension limit in your nvidia control panel. I had a problem with cs crashing as well and that is what fixed it for me.

Last, some of you may say that the 9800 feature more advanced processing or some bull, but you SHOULD know, when it comes down to playing the game, there is not going to be a single noticable frame difference.
Nvidia's way of making a buck.

Also, #4 I have the 175.19 forceware driver installed and you are correct about it, but it runs cs without a problem on my 8800 Ultra.

However, it did affect some of my other games. Odd errors and game crashes/freezes.

#1 I would try the forceware version thing first. At least it wouldnt cost you money.

#6 - I would get a higher PSU if there is nothing else to try. There is also the old, reinstall trick but you probably tried that already :) If I think of anything else that might fix it, I'll post again. I got lucky and figured out SLI mode killed my CS.

try running cs on only one core from your processor
i know that quad cores have problems with some programs
and its not your PSU, that is totally unrelated. playing cs i doubt you would even come close to 300 watts

I would be more likely to guess that its his ram.

Run memtest for a few hours #1 :)

well heres an update, and nope my problem is still not fixed.
I was able to get a 750Watt processor from a friend (free) so no prob,
I have also tried setting cs to both 1 cpu and 2 cpus by setting infinity.
I've tried playing source and noticed that i get different kinda errors in source but errors regardless.

I'll try different drivers again i guess, and ill do a memtest for my RAM.

thanks for helping everyone.

hmmm...weird problem anticlimactic I hope we can figure it out.

-This kind of happened to me a while back and it turned out to be my video card going bad. Now it seems that your video card is good so just to be safe, check and see if your not over heating.

-now like others said, check your ram, maybe down grade to only 2 gigs and see if u still get errors.

-here is a weird one that everyone always over looks, sometime the problem is the hard drive.. you can have a crazy psu, crazy video card, but if your hard drive can only spin so fast and do so much depending on what kind you have. This could be a choke point on your system..check it out

now this might be off the topic, but I have posted a defrag steam topic...read this topic and try out the defrag program

yah, #11 too low of a power supply does matter. Playing a game doesn't 'need' a certain amount of watts. Running the hardware needs a certain amount of watts. Ever wonder why a computer won't turn on or will turn on for a little bit and turn off? You know the hardware isn't faulty, because the answer is not enough power. If you have just barely enough, a bad power supply would infact affect your gaming.

Anyways. A friend of mine switched to the Omega drivers v2.169.21 and that worked for her. Dunno why, but it did. I know you tried other drivers, but not sure if you tried those specific ones.

Also get Rivatuner and make sure to set your fans to 100%. Always a possibility.

probably spyware...even gets me, my game spikes for half a second if i dont run ad-aware atleast once a week, and its frustrating, sometimes my CS even drops to 15fps for atleast 5 seconds and pops right back to 100...however, just cause your PSU is 500W and everything else is "HIGH END", that doesn't mean its an issue of power, its also software related, sure you have quality ram, but what makes it good is how its allocated, not how much you have..

so, i'd try -heapsize and a quick ad-aware scan

hey i fixed my problem, and i'm embarrassed to say, one stick of ram was broken. i have 2 sticks of ram, 2 gb each and i thought i had ruled out the possibility that my ram was broken, but in the end, one stick of ram works, the other didnt.

thanks for the help everyone, hope this helps anyone else with similar problems.
