I have a 256 MB EVGA 8600 GTS and my FPS keeps jumping from around 70 - 99 FPS. Is it because I have a LCD? My FPS stays 99 when I'm in like 3-4 smokes on 32 bit. It seems like my FPS only jumps around from 70-99 when I'm in a CSDM or a server with a lot of people.
My PC specs: 2.8 GHZ Intel Pentium D 3 GB RAM 256 MB EVGA 8600 GTS
#6 thats pretty ancient. its hard to say based on speed alone, it could be fine if you have windows 98 running, but if you have vista aero and norton and other background programs its not enough at all.
Yeah your Intel Pentium D is what hurting your FPS. I had a Pentium D 915 with an 8600GTS and my frames kept dropping. My friend had the E6300 and never suffered drops. I got an E8400 now and it rocks.
its the pentium trust me. ive replaced every single part in my case except for the 3.0 pentium 4 cpu and i still get frame drops in gunfights. for some reason the hl engine just does not work well with them. it would be great if they fixed it with the new beta release but i doubt it.
#16 are you serious? why would they bother making an update for a 5 year old processor? its not that the engine "doesn't work well" its thats they are bad cpu's. very inefficient clock cycles and misleading speeds make them pretty bad.
#17 explain then why i can run games like mass effect and crysis with medium-high physics settings no problem but if their are 10 models on screen in 1.6 running around my fps drops to 70-90 fps. the point is its an 8 year old game that a 4 year old cpu should handle no problem.
first the question should be what resolution are you using, b/c my old 2.53ghz celeron and 256mb x-600 ati, would clock well over 130 fps steady with smokes and a steady gunfight at 1024x768, and i only had 1gb of pc-3200 memory.
after that, i really can't say, but ya.... i miss the old days of my ati 7000 64mb, and clocking 14 fps on aztec, graphic lag + bridge w/awp = ownage
#18, firstly, cs is about 90% cpu so any intense spots will bog down the cpu pretty badly, whereas all the new games are more like 75% graphics. as you said, the detail and physics might be on a higher setting, but the graphics card deals with all of that now, alleviating the cpu from a lot of work
#10 and #14 seem to make the most sense in this thread, your computer, while being a bottle neck is still in great shape, although it never hurts to upgrade it, however try using heapsize in launch options to increase ingame performance, sometimes video drivers can be the cause of the issue too...if you really want to test it, turn the sound off ingame completely and see if that helps your cause, and make sure you keep your security updates up-to-par, because performance updates are released... so, all in all
keep the following updated: -video card -motherboard -soundcard -microsoft security updates -directx 9.0c/10.0
and, most importantly, make sure you don't have a thousand applications open while CS'ing..apps like winamp, aim, msn, and mozilla tend to annihilate resources
my semprom 1900+ 1.5 gig ram fx5200 128mb runs 1.6 at 95-99 except in smokes, when it drops as i get closer to where the sgren went off, goin as low as ~60 in one smoke...
there are useful links on my profile (for 1.6) so check it out
When I play CS, I don't have a lot of programs open besides Ventrilo and mIRC. I download and install all the Microsoft updates whenever it's out. I'm not sure what driver version I have, but how can I check? It seems like it's only CS that has FPS drops since in games like Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4, I can play the game on high settings just fine.
Thats strange...Even though you don't have the most powerful CPU, that CPU should be more than enough to run CS 1.6. Also the GPU is more than enough to handle CS too...Hmm...
I don't know, but I think Steam has changed over the years...Especially after that update. I mean, I got FPS drops with my x2 5600+....In custom maps....And none at all with my new E5200 Intel core 2 duo processor..
anyone here not relize that there is a love affair with valve and ati/amd? before i switched to my 512 8600gtx i had an ati 9600xt ran hl2 pretty decently... 99 fps in hl1 mods at all times, switched to 8600gtx and wouldnt go above 60 for a while then would flop around alot, switched back to ati in the hd 2600xt 512 just as a trial and never waivered from 99...
The people saying your CPU isn't good enough are WRONG. That chipset is OLD but so is CS 1.6. If however you are playing CS:S then yes, your CPU could be causing those fps drops. However I've been subject to this fps drop issue, and it is very common for 1.6. I had 100fps steady with 9700pro and 2600xp, and once I switched to a x800xt pe my fps would go from 100 to 50. The fixes: I tried 30 diff drivers till I found a set that worked decent, still got some fps drop to 80. Next I tried an nvidia card to no avail. Finally, I switched from windows XP to win2k pro and BOOM. My problem was solved. The problem: CS 1.6 is a super old game, and forces many new videocards to operate in opengl 1.0 even though their drivers are optimized for newer opengl 2.0+. Therefore older drivers often can fix the problem. Also, I know a few people who had FPS drop due to hardware incompatabilities, a weak psu (don't just look at watts but amps, especially for the new cards), dusty case which = overheating. Hope this helps anyone here who has these issues.
im 256mb ram. graphics- intel(r) 82845[stock]. Intel(R) pentium 4. 22inch lcd. a g9 and a bad mousepad. i get like 70-99 fps. but i lag in smokes...other than that i roll kids xD
siKes->siKes->siKes=siKes. You never understand...Until you just DO IT.
100 FPS w/ 8600GTS
My PC specs:
2.8 GHZ Intel Pentium D
3 GB RAM
256 MB EVGA 8600 GTS
u might want to check all ur drivers as well.
and a decent power supply is indeed.

I had the same problem, but when i changed my processor fixed that problem.
IntelŪ PentiumŪ Dual CPU E2200
i get better fps that that with a amd64 3200+, 1gb ddr 400 mem, 7600gs :x
try new drivers
do you have a soundcard or do you use onboard sound?

It's sick how it can't be good enough for a game from y2k
