my steelseries siberia icemats have recently been giving out on me.. getting crackly sound after using for an hour or so. at first i thought it was my drivers/usb soundcard that came with the headset so i went to onboard, but no improvement.
so now, i'm looking to buy a new soundcard and headset. i'm looking to spend around $200 give or take a little.
i was leaning towards the seinnheiser hd555, but then realized i wouldn't have much money left for the soundcard.
i dont know much about soundcards either, so what's the best combo i can buy for around that amount.
would it really be worth it to spend $180 on a soundcard for only cs 1.6? i mean i listen to music on my mac laptop, so i barely ever listen to music while on my PC unless i'm in a pub or something.
but like i said, i dont know anything about soundcards so i'm probably wrong.
that's what i had, which came with my siberias, but it stopped working after 5 months or less. so i dont know if i want to spend $30 and have it stop working again
i wasn't expecting it to make me a better cs player.. i just wanted better sound quality overall because of the buzzing i hear and the occasional times i'll listen to music on my PC
thanks for all the information guys, any more would be appreciated. and #11, i was actually looking at the HD555 + x-fi xtreme gamer because it seems like it's about the best route you can go with $200 or so. I think i'll go with that unless i find another deal or any more information changes my mind.
i use onboard audio with http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/S.. and i havent had a problem with it, not even single time and i can hear all the footsteps loud and clear. i played cal-m in 1.6 and then switched to css and currently in cal-m tournament. But yeah no point in spending 200$ for audio. get a fatal1ty 50$ headset if u really need something good. more then that is just foolish.
best headset/soundcard combo

sennheiser Pc 350 + creative USB soundcard
sennheiser rulezzz
HD555 + X-Fi Xtreme Gamer are really good for ~$200. Personally, I would not compromise my 555s for $30.
Forget the PC350s, I have them and I went back to my 555s :p, they're in my neck as a mic now :/
If your headset breaks, stop buying bad ones that don't go over the ear. Soundcard is irrelevent to cs play.

creative makes some ok ones in the cheaper range, and for more expensive cans you could try these:
audio technica a-700s if you want a closed headset
ad-700s if you like an open set
if you wanna go sennheiser get a hd555 or 595
grado sr-125 or sr-225
beyerdynamics are also a good brand

lol
also #16 i'd reccomend getting the audio technica ad-700s... http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/forums..
if you're really into the hd-555s go for them, but many reviews have said the ad-700s beat both 555 and 595s, make sure you know what you're buying.
555s and ad-700s go for the about same price, so read reviews of both and make sure that you're not buying a headset you'll regret in the end.
