Reasoning for low res

I noticed a lot of competitive gamers use low resolutions when playing- 640x480 and 800x600. What is the actual reasoning behind this preference? What makes lower resolutions better other than the fact that one gets more fps (or refresh rate is better if a higher refresh rate is not supported at higher resolutions)?

OMG same question here.

The reason is that less pixels you see on the screen, easier it is to see where your bullets are going and easier to aim at objects. Especially in CS where the player model sizes are always the same size in pixels, thus on 640x480 player models seem bigger compared to 800x600 for example.

Smaller crosshair, less area to focus on. Though I use 1280x800.

reasoning behind this preference

contradictory, but ok.

res doesn't matter, but i would think it could be as off hand as this. think about when cs came out, most monitors and desktops were probably only 640 natively, and they got used to it.

now thats probably not it, but i just came up with it, and it seems like a chance.

ower resolution usually inherits higher fps. not sure if source or 1.6 really need the boost, but for TF2 and COD 4/5 the lower resolutions really help out a great deal.

*I'd recommend that you play with whatever resolution feels most comfortable, though if you're up for new stuff try "1024x768" because it's not TOO pixelated and the font is usually really nice for the FPS/resolution trade-off.

Load up cs in 1024x768, than load up in in 640. Sure its uglier. But everything feels smaller. Enemies appear larger, and the game feels more fast paced. This applies to a lot of games like, quake and 1.6

It is entirely all preference. If you run an LCD I always suggest to run the native resolution, but CRT doesn't matter. So when it comes down to it, I always play at the lowest resolution for CRT so the game feels the smoothest, but when I play on LCDs, it's always native for me. :P

Mainly people who use low res also use CRTS. The reason people use CRTs is the 120 hertz, now most CRTS cannot produce 120 hertz at 1024x768, but most can at 800x600.

I don't know if the new gen. LCDs can get 120 hertz at higher resolutions, but prank from COD uses 1280x1024 on the new ViewSonic VX2265wm (which can get 120 hertz), so I'm guessing the new LCDs are capable of that.

People still use low resolutions because they think it's cool. Same with low steam IDs. It shows off how long you've been playing the game. Using a low resolution implies that you played this game when it was around before steam and 800x600 was your desktop resolution, or even 640x480. Basically it all comes down to ego. People still use 640x480 because it makes them feel old school, and gives them something to fap about. Thats about it.

I use 1280x1024 because that is my monitors native resolution so the pixel ratio is 1:1 and the image is MUCH sharper than on 8x6 or any other resolution, so I can see through the holes in fences and whatnot on maps like de_cpl_fire

i think someone did an experiment some time ago that on lower res the cone of bullets that happens when the game predicts in some degree will be bigger, although by not much.

thus the spray hits easier but it will be harder for you to see long distance and things will be blurred so it balances out i guess.

im not sure but i think that does make sense

I think it may seem easier for some to hit with sprays on lower resolution because their is less viewable area, which makes the margin of user error less severe. Other than that, there is no inherent difference other than framerate and refresh rate.

There are a few diff reasons why.
#1 - Back then lower res = higher FPS when CS was a more graphically demanding game. So the pros are just used to it now.
#2 - Models look bigger, less precision needed
#3 - Some old monitors couldn't handle higher res

My reason for using 640x480 or 800x600.
I feel like I have to move my X-Hair less to react to someone/aim. I started off playing cs at higher res, but was convinced to try lower res and have never turned back. High res requires more precision when aiming and thus my reaction shots aren't as good. And yes, I feel that models look bigger on lower res.

Honestly i can't stand playing a game in a res less than 1280X1024. It looks terrible. Ill play my xbox on my garbage tv if i want low res. I enjoy playing pc games, I enjoy good graphics as well. I crank everything up as long as my fps stays above 60 or so. A lot of the great pro gamers use low res and so of course people are going to say that is better and that it gives them an advantage. I have also noticed however that many pro gamers have terrible rigs and i assume it is because they don't like upgrading/changing anything they are used to.

we are only talking about cs here. outside of cs i prefer using higher resolutions. mainly in fps games, i tend to keep the resolutions under 1024. its the highest res i can get that supports 120hz.
