Sounds like a stupid question, but what happens if i dont get a better power supply? Like what is the worst that can happen besides my psu burning out? Im also gonna get a new psu since i wanna be safe but gotta wait a week for my next pay check.

check on the side of ur vid card box, it tells you the minimum you need to run it in full power... then you have a clue on how much energy you need for your whole computer to work!
You can pay a player to play source, but you can't make him like it.

Basically, when a component gets underpowered it underperforms big time. Also your going to have your current 500w PSU running at max power all the time. With it running like that, you will probably have seriously fluctuating power levels going to your components rather than a steady stream of power. Not good. You'll probably experience a lot of system crashes, low performance and possibly hardware damage.

Honestly it will probably work fine for a couple weeks while you're waiting for the new PSU, but with the hardware you currently have and the new video card coming, why risk it.

I honestly wouldnt go anything less than 850w with that system. Will leave you a small amount of overhead keeping your PSU at acceptable usage levels.

Corsair PSU's are highly recommended. I believe they even make modular PSU's so you dont have to use all the cables, just attach the ones you need, so you have plenty of airflow through your case.

Just as an example, my current system and PSU

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53
Asus p5pro
4gb DDR2 1066
blue-ray/dvd/cd combo player
ati 4850
2x 750gb Seagate HDD's RAID 0
sound blaster x-fi
Corsair 650w PSU

I'm guessing my system is using roughly 550w @ max power. Though If I had a 550w PSU, running at max power anytime my system is on, the heat produced by the PSU will shorten the lifespan extremely quickly and stop providing enough power to my components. Will cause problems, best to be on the safe side and have some overhead.

Hope that helps.

Sorry for third post. One more thing I forgot to mention, having good 12volt rails is important as well. You don't want a PSU that has four 12v rails @25 AMPS.

I'm guessing that GTX275 probably needs roughly 45-50 AMPS. So when looking for a powersupply, look for one that has one 12v rail @60+ AMPS or two 12v rails @45-50+ AMPS. Having 2 solid 12v rails would be nice if you ever decide to go SLI, because now you will have a PSU which can properly power both video cards to their max potential.
