Hey, I have an ATI 4870 1GB and a Samsung 206bw 20in widescreen monitor. I want to have the black bars on the sides of my screen in game so that it isnt stretched out. I tried enabling the GPU scaling and changed the image scaling in the ATI control panel but that didn't seem to make a difference. Anyone have any solutions to this ? Thanks !!
Unfortunately man, you're kinda hosed. I would go through every option in your monitor and see if I could find a 4:3 aspect ratio control, because otherwise it will never work. I have a 4850, and until I physically set my monitor to 4:3 in-game, it would never give me the black bars.
1.6 is a big deal, of course, since it affects your gameplay with higher resolutions. The one thing that's nice about Source is that the game doesn't have an issue with resolutions and hitboxes(thank GOD, too, I switched around between 3 monitors over the course of one season).
Anyway, the only other option for you, if your Samsung doesn't have any OSD controls that allow you to switch to 4:3, is to replace your card with an NVidia one. Crappy solution, I know, but that's about the best advice I could give.
I have a samsung, diff model though, t220 22". I'm able to change the scaling through the actual monitor itself using the menu buttons. On mine it's under image size, then I hit auto. Try seeing if you have this option.
#7 read my post again !! Thanks for the replies, its not so bad stretched at 1024 really ill play around some more with my OSD stuff and see if i can fix it. Thanks everyone :D
Go in your LCD settings > Setup > image Size. You will have 2 options, Wide will stretch at any resolution, Auto will keep aspect ratio depending on resolution.
this is taken from my old monitor, a 26'' syncmaster, so i guess it must be roughly the same (maybe with a bit more gadget options), but you should have this one.
I use this and my GPU scaling (on ATI 4870HD) turned off.
uNrest next time you +frag yourself and -frag someone else, you might want to make sure the person you're -fragging actually read what the person asked. You failed hard at reading comprehension.
edit: Why do I find that hard to believe considering you keep have that cute little +1 on each post you make?
Black Bars with ATI
ATI doesn't have any 4:3 scaling I believe.

technically you should have something like this:
