No! It's not worth to buy a 5870 just for DirectX11 alone, because Dx11 won't be a topic for like at least a year. Therefore the only reason to buy a 5870 would be just to call yourself an owner of what is said to be the currently fastest single chip GPU.
Since the 5870 is the first(and up to now only)Graphic card which is Dx11 compatible ATI will make sure to hold the price as high as possible until Nvidia releases the GT300 series. So the 4890 has a wayyyyyyy better price/performance ratio. And the 4890 is generally a good graphip card with solid perfomance
But, depending on how much power you want for your system I might recommend you to buy an ATI 5850 since it's not only 5-10% faster then the GTX 285(which is a hell of a GPU), but even cheaper - and I'd consider ~220$ for a graphic card still okish.
i don't see why you wouldn't want to go with the 5870. it's the best card out right now depending on how you see things. it's cheaper than the 295, it uses less power than it, idles at 27W(zomg) has DX11, EyeFinity, etc. it beats the 295 in a couple games when the drivers are still at BETA AND its a single GPU. to think what the 5870x2 will do.. dear god O_O
and ati never really overprices their GPU's lol. the 5870 > 295 and it's much cheaper.
still id go with the 5870 because it'll be much more future proof. 4890 or 4870x2 would also be a good choice
4890 is still a good option, because 5870 is still expensive and there is no dx11 games yet, and when nvidia releases g300 series ATI's reaction will be cutting 5870 & 5850's prices and releasing better cards 5870x2 and 5890
but why don't you just wait for 5850 ?!, i heard its price will be for around 260$ and its performance is at least %30 better than 4890
price performance, bang for buck, it's never worth buying a newly released card. give it atleast a few months and the more 58xx series cards are released the prices will drop as well as the older cards
@ #9 I would not get that 4890 get the HIS turbo or XFX XXX about the same price but clocked higher
I'm also debating if I should get the new dx11 card as-well ..... if I spent 200 more dollars I'll be ready for new dx11 games and wont have to upgrade for a few years but if I get a 4890 I'll be happy for about 6 months then want to upgrade to a dx11 card in the long run I think the 5870 will be better for me lol... good luck
Rationally speaking, it's probably a good idea to wait until new years. That way, the drivers will have matured, couple of games will use DX 11 (Dirt 2), and the price will come down a bit.
But then again, a good 4890 will easily last until next summer. By then, GT 300 will be out and the prices on the 5870 will come down even more. And hopefully a handful of games will use DX 11. Also, maybe the 5890 will be out by next summer? Who knows
I think the best idea would be to get Windows 7 now, and wait for a couple/few months for 5870 to mature and get a price drop. Most likely, I'm going this route.
umm im pretty sure i read dx11 will be backwards compatible with all dx10 cards. they said that was one of the major failures of dx10 that anyone to use it would need to upgrade their pc and os.
#14. Sounds good, I'll probably be doing the same thing...
Also, @Pwnzie, I know what you're saying, but I'm not THAT hardcore about all the new games that require a nice card. I'm into TF2 right now and the most graphics intensive game I have played is probably CoD4. I know this card is probably overkill for those games but I just want to be set for a while, while I've got the money.
5870 or 4890
Okay so I was on newegg today and saw that the ATI 5800 series graphics cards have been released.
My question is, will it be necessary to buy one because it has DirectX 11 or should I just stick w/ a 4890.
Also, in a price to performance ratio, which would be more bang for the buck, the 4890 or the 5870.
Thanks

i'd get a 5870 or wait till the G300's are released and see what they have to offer. though, the 4890 is still an amazing card for the price.
I will probably just grab the 5870 around x-mas anyways...
Thanks

I will definitely pick one up in the future though...
Looks good too me, but hell, what do I know.
