The MX518 Mouse Review
By Jason “Alchemist” Baker

Every time a new mouse comes out the first question that burns in the mind of gamer is “Will this improve my playing?” Things have changed a lot over the years with Logitech mice. No longer the cheap replacement mice as with the MX series, these mice became a full fledged contender in the gamer mouse wars. With topics almost daily in the forums, it is time to take the MX518, the newest in the Logitech line, for a test drive.

First impressions

After seeing the product in the box, I started to wonder what the surface is like. It looks like a piece of metal that has been hit with a hammer. The illusion is created very well. The surface is slick and smooth, but much like the MX510, a bit too slick for my taste. The MX500 had a bit of a gritty feel to it making it less likely to slip out of one’s hand. It is not hard to get used to, but I believe that it is not the ideal feel for a gaming mouse. The thumb buttons, on the other hand, do have a bit of a texture to them, giving some grip. The mouse wheel turns smoothly without too much friction slowing it down. The sensitivity buttons are recessed a bit into the mouse to prevent hitting them by mistake. The MX510 was raised to the point that I ended up cutting off the button just under the wheel. The mouse is a bit lighter than the previous 500 series, but not by much. I did not even notice the weight difference until I picked up my old mouse. The feet are smooth and slide nicely on my cloth mat and on the desk.

When your mouse starts to get old use Finish 2001 car wax on your mouse feet once a week to keep them slick and it also prevents them from tearing.
