Macro-licious One of the greatest features the G15 has is its ability to not only store macros for use on the “G” keys, but also to be able to record them without switching over to any Logitech software. Yes, this means you can record macros while in game using the Quick Record feature. Let’s start from the beginning. On the left side of the keyboard, you will find 18 keys known as the “G” keys. Just above these you will find 3 buttons aptly labeled M1, M2, and M3. These are, in effect, groupings of the “G” keys below. Essentially, it means you can have 54 potential macro keys. How awesome is that? Using the included software, you can set up profiles for different programs/games. You can also set up the profile to automatically load when that program/game is launched. To make things more convenient, there are downloaded profiles you can import, and even key overlays you can print out. If you have created a profile you would like to share with friends, you can export it. This is useful for uploading your profiles to one of the G15's popular community sites. Using Quick Record, you can set up your profile while you are in game. Make sure to set your creation to a new, blank profile when you do this, or it's possible to overwrite macros in another profile. Then, while in a game, just press the MR button (next to the M3 button), hit the “G” key you would like to record to, perform the actions you wish to execute, and press the MR button again to complete the macro. The “G” key used will now automatically perform the actions you made when recording. However, it does not record mouse clicks, and if deliberate pauses are necessary to accurately perform what you need, you will have to insert them manually. If you pause to think about what you're doing during recording, the pause will be automatically cropped. That way, your macro will execute rapidly, even though you're predictably as slow as molasses. Bonus Features Just when you thought this keyboard couldn’t have anything else added to it, YOU WERE WRONG! On the top of the keyboard, you will find two extremely convenient USB ports for thumb drives, USB sound cards, or controllers. On the bottom of the keyboard, you will find built-in cable management. This is great -- say you use a joystick or a gamepad on a frequent basis, but don’t leave it plugged into your desktop. Just plug it into the top of the keyboard and snap the wire into place underneath, and you're good to go. The routing lets a wire run directly under the keyboard, and out the middle in the front without throwing the keyboard off balance. This is great for USB headsets and gamepads. Now you won’t have an obnoxious cable hanging over the top of the keyboard. I think Logitech thought of everything. |
