Intel's new processor promises to turn all kinds of heads. Is it worthy of the most hype the hardware world has ever seen?

Three years ago Intel was on top of the world. They did, after all, have plenty reason to be. Their Pentium 4 processor was in every way superior to its competition in AMD’s Athlon XP series, their hold on the market share lead was more firm than ever, and they had some newfangled thing called “Prescott” on the horizon. Things were certainly looking good.

Then September of 2003 rolled around and things got a bit more interesting. AMD was launching a pair of brand new processors, the Athlon 64 3200+ (ClawHammer) and the Athlon FX-51 (SledgeHammer), one of which was going after the ultra-high-end market that Intel had laid claim to since… well, since forever. Not one to take such a move sitting down, Intel launched their first ever “Extreme Edition” processor in the same week as the FX-51. Toting higher clock speeds and an unlocked multiplier, the Pentium 4 EE chip had surely saved Intel from a possible threat. But what about that other chip? The seemingly innocent little Athlon 64, with its 2.0 GHz and on-chip memory controller only capable of single-channel operation, was starting to get a lot of attention. It took a little while, as things in the hardware world always do, but this Athlon 64 eventually became a really big deal. Hardware journalists and publications far and wide were hailing the 3200+ as the “fastest yet”, smoking the Pentium 4 in all sorts of benchmarks, including one really big one, games. But while the enthusiast community had seen the light, the rest of the world would end up being a bit more skeptical of these low clock speeds compared to the new 3.46 GHz Pentium 4 - How could it possibly be faster?

With the hype and press generated by Intel’s “Prescott”, you know, that one processor that turned out NOT to be the Pentium 5, AMD and their Athlon 64 remained mostly in the shadows of their larger rival. Then in June of 2004, AMD dropped what would cause an even more serious problem for Intel, a new socket 939 and a new 90nm core called Winchester. With this new socket came support for faster bus speeds and, more importantly, dual-channel memory configurations. Intel was in trouble. Not only did AMD have this new ace on the pitch, but their Prescott line was getting ripped left and right due to the lack of any significant performance increase resulting from the higher power consumption and heat levels. In a little under a year, things for Intel had taken a turn for the worse.

And while Intel may have retained most of the market-share for the last 3 years, their processor repertoire has been far from star-studded and almost unanimously considered inferior to that of AMDs. But Intel was not down for the count, and like any good competitor, they had a little something up their sleeve. In May of 2004, after realizing that the future of the Pentium 4’s "NetBurst" microarchitechture did not look very bright at all and that AMDs mid-range lineup was wiping the floor with the best they had to offer, Intel engineers started work on something new…

The term “Conroe” first hit the hardware scene sometime in 2005, tracking down the exact date would be like searching for a needle in a haystack when there wasn’t actually a needle in there in the first place. While we have certainly “known” about Conroe since around that time, we first wrote about it after details were released and confirmed at the Spring Intel Developer Forum (IDF) of this year.

In our previous article, we discussed the basic developmental aspects of the Intel Core Microarchitecture (ICM) including the history, the reasons, and the development itself. Now we would like to futher elaborate on ICM and its first face, Core 2 Duo.

nice to see hardware doing their first professional article.

I'd recomment cleaning up some of the plots that contain too much information and splitting them (i think you wrote about how they contain too much info). I would organize those better. But otherwise, good job, and on release date too!

One more thing...with the plots that have 2 shades of green, it is too hard to distinguish...pick 2 totally diff colors like blue/red next time! It'll make it much easier to see for me. Also, you could've combined some of the plots in page 15. Wow u guys should hire me as an editor

Finally, I think you guys are the first to OC these CPUs that aren't even in stores yet...nice. It's good to see how far the 6700 can go, how did the 6600 do?

good stuf, good to see good stuff coming from intel after years of sh1ty cpu's. Although i wonder what amd has planned for it's am2 platform, i mean they can't sit around and do nothing

#6, AMD can't do anything for a good 6 months now. They should've realized that going to DDR2 wasn't going to help much, if at all, while Intel released a whole new generation of CPUs. The AM2's are practically identical to the previous generation, except at 65nm die

Great work, competition does benefit the consumer. Now AMD will come out with something that beats the conroe by a bit, then Intel, then AMD. Up until now AMD was sitting up top easy, no innovation required.

#2...im gonna flame you dude because your last comment about gotfrag being the first to overclock these cpu's definitely is not true as there are MANY ppl who have overclocked these and pretty much broken every WR in every standard benchmark thus far

besides that i thought the article was good and well written only quirk i have with the overclocking part is why the loose timings on the ram? dunno what ram you were using but from what i have seen of other oc'ing results on core2duo none of them were running 5-5-5 but w/e ;)

good read none the less and am seriously considering upgrading to an E6600

Why not do a comparison with AMD? Maybe you'll get the same results as HardOCP

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.htm..

You'll see that the Conroes really don't have much of an advantange over AMD. I'm not saying either is bad, but it's a little overhyped for the real performance. With either CPU (AMD or Intel) the GPU will still be the bottleneck. You'll find similar performance in both CPUs.

we had no AMD processors to test against, #20. This was more of an examination of their stand-alone performance and overclock scalability, which is quite impressive.

#27, willingly bottleneck a CPU test? When both CPUs are bottlenecked by a video card, they're going to have similar performance. Even when you have everything at low detail @ 800x600, you'll have similar results.

hahah #20 that is one of the worst cpu comparisons ive seen... pretty much all their benchmarks were on games which are gpu dominated. its made worse by the fact that they crank up all the gfx settings to max and then say hey these cpus perform the same....

running tests on low gfx settings is how to show cpu differences

^^ QFT

#20 Those benchmarks are absurd. Here lets limit the CPU's potential by running in resolutions that most every day gamers dont use, on hardware most every day gamers dont have. Seriously.

Run some common resolutions like 1280x1024, where the CPU actually has a chance to excel and show what we are looking for, CPU performance and not GPU performance.

very good article and its finally nice to see gotfrag hardware acting like a real hardware site. Also 17 pages is nothing compared to some of the articles over at tomshardware and anandtech. But one thing I can tell you is AMD will be back on top but it will take some time. Its gonna go back and forth between amd and intel for a while. Its practically impossible to stay on top for more than 1-2 years.

Was thinking to Get a Core 2 duo, especially after the presentation and demo INTEL gave at ESWC, but along with a news mobo, more RAM to satisfy that monster, a 600 watt PSU it turned out to be more than what i can afford :(

#46, the core 2 processors use less power than any p4 out there, and sometimes even less than athlon64s. Also, ddr2 ram requires less power than ddr1. In fact, I have no idea why it requires an EPS12V mobo seeing as across the board it uses less power. The core2 systems at WSVG had huge PSUs to power the crossfire X1900s

I just read the intro and conclusion and got all the pertinent information..good read!
