Conclusion
We started off this review saying that the Z800 3DVisor from eMagin caught our eye at E3 because it was quite probably the most innovative product on display. After having used it for a few weeks, we are sticking to our assessment. By having a product that goes above and beyond the competition in terms of performance, practicality, and price, eMagin has a real winner with the Z800 3DVisor.

There are, however, as there are with any new product, several things that we believe could be changed to make the 3DVisor that much more attractive to the hardcore gamers among us. One thing we would change is to include longer VGA and USB cables with the HMD unit. This would greatly reduce frustration and ease the installation process. Another thing we would change is to somehow increase the maximum screen resolution from 800x600. The biggest change we would make to the device would be to improve the head tracking system, as it created more problems for us than we would have liked. The last suggestion we have is to make the unit wireless. Using the device while sitting down on a chair with your keyboard in front of you and trying to play a game could be a rather odd experience that can result in strangulation via cord and high frustration levels from wondering where your keyboard went.

Pros

+ Compact Design
+ Simple driver install
+ Low price
+ Stereovision functionality
+ On-device audio input/output
+ LOW power consumption

Cons

- Head tracking could use some improvement
- Ships with cables that are far too short
- Not (readily) available in large quantities

Rating

9.0 out of 10

According to our rating criteria, we should have really given this product a 9.5. It represents the very best in head mounted displays and is offered at a very attractive price compared to competitors. However, we found that the little things like the short cables and the head tracking problems pull the Z800 a little bit out of that 'Superb' range. That said, the Z800 3DVisor is definitely a great product and is strongly recommended for gamers who want the most immersive experience possible.
