The display package of the Visor is adjusted via a double-hinged joint that allows you to move the unit as far or as close as you would like from your eyes. There are two adjustment straps on the 3DVisor that allow you to get a comfortable fit. The top adjustment strap allows the Visor to fit squarely on your head at the right height, while the rear strap ensures the Visor will not slip out of place at any time during use. Another useful adjustment on the Z800 is ability to slide the lenses further apart to accommodate for large noses or eyes that are just farther apart. The head tracking feature of the Z800 is by way of 3 gyroscopes that afford a full 6 degrees of freedom. This technology is very comparable to what we will be seeing in video game controllers for the Playstation 3 and Wii, two consoles that have not yet been released. In the past, motion tracking has not always been the most practical technology. The Z800 changes that by offering the entire functionality of a 10 pound head mounted display in a very lightweight package. The Z800 also incorporates full ‘hi-fi’ audio on the Visor. The audio output is by way of your standard earbuds, which clip on to the frame when not in use. The Visor also has a built-in microphone to complete the communication suite. When head tracking is enabled, the Z800 becomes a complete replacement for headphones, monitor, and mouse. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Z800 is the power consumption figure. Under typical operation the Z800 utilizes less than 1.25W. A standard laptop TFT display uses 11W when it is on the lowest brightness levels. The difference here is huge. So huge, in fact, that one of eMagin’s main claims for this product is that it will, “Maximize your laptop battery ‘life’.” Provided, of course, that you use it as a complete replacement of the laptop monitor. |
