FPSLabs Home: Logitech G3 Review

Logitech brings another mouse to the G-Series. Presenting the G3: the G5's little brother.

Logitech G3

Category: Mice
Manufacturer: Logitech
Product: The G3
Gallery: Click Here
Price: $59.99

Logitech has been in the peripheral industry since the beginning. Their ability to design comfortable, yet functional products has made them the leader in this industry. With the refining of laser technology, comes the march of this technology into the mainstream. Leading this march is Logitech's latest gaming mouse: The G3.

The G3 comes packaged in the standard Logitech packaging: a plastic display encasing the mouse package in a turquoise and white box. The box is, however, scaled down and resembles the small software boxes. Included in the package are the mouse, a CD, and your standard manuals and paperwork. The G3 is sharp right from the get go. From the marble-like top to the DryGrip coating on the rest of the mouse, this is sleek looking mouse. More and more mice today are being built with lights galore and the G3 is a nice break from the decorative gimmick. One nice feature I noticed was the feet on the bottom. My main complaint over the years has been that Logitech needed to make the feet bigger and better. It seems they heard my cry.

I admit I am a 5-button gamer. I find it difficult to use a mouse without all 5-buttons. In a previous review, I marked down a couple of Microsoft mice based on personal preference for having the two side buttons on opposite sides rather than the same. The G3 places these side buttons on opposite sides, but the implementation is much better. The buttons are large and responsive, so they actually feel comfortable to use in this configuration.
Specifications:
System Requirements
  • IBM® or compatible PC
  • Windows Vista™ (requires Internet connection)
  • Windows® XP or 2000
  • USB port
Technical Specifications
  • Tracking Resolution: 2000
  • Image Processing: 6.4 megapixels/second
  • Max. Acceleration: 20G
  • Max. Speed: 45—65 inches/second (depending on surface)
  • USB Data Format: 16 bits/axis
  • USB Report Rate: 500 reports/second
  • Sleep Mode: Disabled
  • Dynamic Coefficient of friction - Mu (k): 0.09 (tested on wood-veneer desktop)
  • Static Coefficient of friction - Mu (s): 0.15 (tested on wood-veneer desktop)
  • Buttons (Left/Right): 8 million clicks
  • Feet: 250 kilometers
The specs are promising. Resolution, maximum acceleration, and maximum speed are all high. You'll notice sleep mode is disabled. What we look for in a gaming mouse is three-fold: responsiveness, tracking, and friction. Sleep mode is disabled so that you won't lose a fraction of a second from the time you move the mouse to the time you see your crosshairs move. With sleep mode enabled, your mouse would go into "power-save" while you were playing. This would happen a lot while sniping and waiting for an opponent. When the mouse went to move it would have to power up the optical or laser engine before it could respond. Thus, gamers will love the fact that sleep mode is disabled. Let's take a look at the other factors I mentioned.

Nice review, but like eggman I will not get rid of my MX510 until Logitech brings back the second thumb button.

"Against 8 bots in Quake 3 I was only able to keep 60 point lead"

nice review....

If the G5 had 2 thumb buttons, it would be perfect, this is just a G5 in the shape of a razor tbh, and the shape is all preference

that isn't the shape of a razer mouse...

it's the exact same shape as an MX300 which was a popular mouse back then

the mx310 shape sucked ass, and the 500 shape was used in the 500, 510, 518

i haven't paid attention to gaming mouse in a year or so so i have no idea about g3, g5, or g7, bu the picture is obviously an mx300

can someone confirm that the tracking problem for other laser mice such as the G5 and Copperhead are completely gone with low sensitivity on hard or cloth surfaces? I think its the major downside of laser mice. I know this review does say he couldnt throw the mouse off-track, but could you throw it offtrack with the g5, i know i could.

So once again just to confirm how does the laser tracking compare to that of the g5 and copperhead. On both surfaces and of course with low sensitivity.

Very good article, but I have one question:

What does the person reviewing mean by 8 million clicks?

like #4 said, it is prefrence
and i think a lot more people prefer to have the right hand contorted mouse like the G5 or the mx 510/518
i personally prefer the right handed model.

I am not a fan of how the side buttons are placed. I keep clicking them by mistake. I will agree with everyone else. I want a G5 with 5 buttons and get rid of the tilt in the scroll wheel.
Its a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake.

Im sorry folks, but laser tech < optical in many reasons.

Laser was meant to be more accurate, but I dont understand how if its more accurate it skips and lags on low senstivity settings? I even tested that with a 5L and a Copperhead, it still does.

I don't understand why anyone would want to buy this when you can have an mx518, G1 or Diamondback for 20-30$ less. Anyone care to explain? :)

I like the 500 shape so a no-go for me.
However that cycling feature (1Button) is a pretty good idea, what (pro) gamer needs more then 2 sensitivities?

Being a long time Microsoft Intelimouse 1.1 user this mouse excites me. An ambidextrious designed mouse with high dpi capabilities has yet to be introduced (with the exception of the razer diamondback which sucks imo). I do have some questions though... How easy are the side buttons to press? On the diamondback the mouse 4 and 5 buttons were placed on both sides of the mouse and were extremely difficult to press with the pinky sides. Plus even on the thumb side I would often press the wron mouse 4/5 button because they were not separated very well. Secondly, does this mouse track the mousepad when lifted off of the pad? The razer diamondback would track my movement even when I picked it up off of the pad if I didn't lift it high enough, which was VERY annoying to say the least.

is this a laser or optical ?

you should of at least tried to read 1 paragraph of the article #23

Since you're wondering, its laser. As far as i know from other reviews i've read this laser is an updated version of the G5. One of the reviews said teh g3 tracked well on some sort of leather pad they had, but the g5 wouldnt even read it. So i guess thats good news, wont believe it till i try it myself though.

The G1 isn't avail. in North America sadly #27. I believe Logitech said that this would be the replacement for us instead of the G1.

Used MX300 since the day it came out years and years ago. Finally replaced it with this one, and I'm loving it. The dry-grip on the sides feel great, and I like the feel of the mouse buttons and scroll wheel. No problems with the tracking.
