OCZ, one of the premier upstarts in the RAM market, has taken the hardware world by storm with awesome bandwidth capabilities and super low timings. How does one of their latest DDR2 products, the Special Ops Edition Urban Elite, perform?

Category: Memory
Manufacturer: OCZ Technology
Product: OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Special Ops Edition Urban Elite
Price: $314.99

OCZ Technology is a RAM manufacturer located in Sunnyvale, California. They entered the RAM market in 2002 and haven't looked back since their release of DDR 400 DRAM. They have become one of the premier RAM producers and are continually pushing the envelope in the enthusiast and over clocking markets. With infamous modules like their Platinum Revision 2 and excellent customer service and lifetime warranties OCZ has been one of the most reliable performance RAM makers for us gamers. While they haven’t been around as long as say Corsair or Kingston, by no means should their quality and service be discounted.

Companies have been pushing the PC market towards DDR2 for some time now. With the release of AM2 and now Core 2 Duo, DDR2 is finally becoming the standard in the memory department. With many gamers and PC users taking the plunge into these new platforms it’s time for us to start giving you readers recommendations and to get you ready for the move to DDR2.

The RAM
Today we are testing one of the latest 2GB DDR2 kits from OCZ. Geared towards gamers the OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Special Ops Edition Urban Elite is rated at 800 MHz with excellent timings of 4-4-3-15 at its price point.

The RAM package is standard OCZ fair. Their cardboard lined bubble pack which holds the memory just fine. It’s no thrills but it gets the job done.

Even though you have surely noticed it already, the main thing that first catches our eye about this RAM is its camouflage colored heat spreaders. I have to admit, when I first saw these sticks online I was not impressed with the color scheme, I just didn’t like it. But now that I have them in my possession the camouflage coloring really doesn’t bother me. In fact the whole black motif will fit great in my case and the grey and black coloring is slightly faded so it doesn’t really stick out like a sore thumb. It really does look sharp. I set this ram out in the woods and it was harder to find than RAMbo 4! (Just Kidding)

The Urban Elite has one of the two main kids of heat spreaders that OCZ uses. They have your standard fair solid piece spreaders and these sticks use the honeycomb style. Whether or not heat spreaders do much good isn’t up for debate but it does really give the memory a sharp look, instead of seeing black memory modules mounted on a PCB.

The OCZ sticker which should remain on the memory or it can void your warranty contains some more info about the RAM. It contains the part number, the name, and the specifications.
