A hot-swappable SATA 2.5” hard drive enclosure thingy was shown to us by Nanini Yu. The unit consisted of a 2.5’ hard drive enclosure that has an eSATA port in the back for the data transfer method. This method was then inserted into a plastic, spring-loaded framework that incorporates the SATA cable. The enclosure snaps into place and locks back in the framework such that the front of the enclosure is flush with the front of the framework. The entire thing is meant to be installed in a 3.5” bay that is accessible to the front of the computer case. The user then pushes in the enclosure slightly, it pops out, and off they go. We thought this was a pretty innovative idea that a lot of more mobile-oriented users could find invaluable.

The next thing Tagan showed us was a fan-less power supply. There has been fan-less power supplies in the past, so the concept is nothing new. However, most of these units are rated at 400W and below. This means that users wanting to incorporate such a supply into their computer are forced to use less powerful components than they might want. This Tagan fan-less power supply was rated at 500W. The device is quite heavy. Trying to peek through the ventilation we were able to spot really huge heatsinks throughout the device basically filling up what would have been the free space. Had we a screwdriver on hand, we would have been able to open this beast up and snap some shots of the engineering involved.

The next power supply company we stopped by was Sparkle Power. Although not very well known in gaming circles, Sparkle Power is the fifth largest manufacturer of power supplies in the world. They are known for quality products at low prices, and have just recently introduced several new models targeted towards high-end computer users like gamers. They have 600, 700, and 880W models available. We hope to have one of these units in the labs for testing here sometime real soon.
