FPSLabs Home: Razer DeathAdder Review

By: Stu Grubbs - Published June 25, 2007 at 11:30 PM EDT - Writer Archive
The Razer DeathAdder is the latest from one of the best known peripheral companies in the serious gaming market. Let's see how it stacks up.

Category: Mice
Manufacturer: Razer
Product: DeathAdder
Gallery: Click Here
Price: $44.90

One of the things we enjoy most about reviewing hardware and talking to our readers is when we, the media, can help a product receive more attention. For years, Razer has made mice that grabbed the attention of a gaming niche and gained the reputation of making mice that were either loved or hated. Once a gamer had used a Razer mouse, they either swore by the company or never considered them again. In the last two years, Razer has expanded their product line into keyboards, audio cards, headsets, and even speakers. Reviewers for the last half of the decade have been begging Razer to make a mouse to fit the rest of world; players who liked to grab the mouse and not push it with their fingertips. Razer has heard the cry. For this project they called in the big guns: Microsoft. As you all very well know, Microsoft created the world’s most popular gaming mouse, so who's better to team up with? In their joint effort, two mice emerged: The Microsoft Habu and The Razer DeathAdder.

Today we will look at the mouse that is an answer to everyone out there that wanted to be a Razer user, but couldn’t stand their current lineup. The DeathAdder is heralded as one of the most superior mice they have ever created.

The Packaging
Every time I get the chance to review a Razer product I stress the packaging that their products arrive in. This time is no different. The quality and look of their packaging and artwork is a direct reflection of the quality of their products. Sleek, clean, and well marketed, it truly is an attention getter.

The product is secure and safe within the plastic housing. The manual, driver CD, and such are tucked neatly in back. All in all, I give props to the guy who designed this and other Razer packaging for creating an excellent balance in both form and function. I know this all sounds stupid, but remember the last time you bought a product and not only was the packaging obnoxious, but impossible to work with? This probably deterred from the entire experience of purchasing the item. Razer, much like Apple, understands that the packaging is part of the experience of owning one of their products.

looks very nice and of good built quality (opposed to previous razer mice IMO)
If I had to buy a mouse, I would definitely consider this one, over the habu, which looks cheaper and less sturdy.

Oh btw, you forgot to put the link in the first paragraph ;)
nice review, I'm very happy that GFhardware are releasing more and more reviews, the site's doing quite good ! (And I'm still on it at 4:20 in the morning uhghh)

Keep on the good work !

#7 Yes, unfortunately with all the changes that were recently announced we have been backlogged with some reviews we have had for a little while longer than usual. However, you can rest assured that you will be seeing more timely reviews.

#8 Razer and Microsoft designed and produced the Habu, so I would think that you can expect the same build quality. Check out our review: http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/story/..

great mouse. if you use MX dont get this mouse.

edit: i dont like how easily the mousewheel spins. if you use it in cs to jump or duck you might find yourself randomly jumping or ducking. it has messed me up in many situations. that's why i switched back to my mx518, the mousewheel. go figure eh?

#11, that is why we put the very last paragraph on there.

There are just far too many features and criteria on which to judge gaming peripherals to consider any review of them completely objective or definitive. Personal preference plays an immeasurably large roll, so in order to know if a gaming peripheral is right for you, you should not only read reviews, but go out and test it for yourself. You bring up a good point, thanks.

bad review--its by no means a perfect mouse.

EDIT: i found on the 3 i tested that when i held down the right mouse button and scrolled the wheel it rubbed on the button casing. And offering the ability to upgrade firmware gives razer the option of selling mice that need updating. There's no excuse for the product not working perfect out of the box.

Be sure to take a look at this review as well: http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1300293 . The only gripe I have with this mouse is that if the resolution (dpi) is lowered the performance is severely impacted (http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=.. Other than that, it's an excellent product.

Rating
9.5 out of 10

They didnt copy off the 3.0's shap well enough. The deathadder is too high, and not wide enough - and mouse1 and 2 are far too Razer'ish.
Why o' why in the world would they not just implant there sicksick optical engine in the most beloved mouse shape in the history of gaming?

holy wow a 10!

how can u give something a 10.

GF creditability went out the window after reading this.

no1 mentioned the excessive install of drivers to get this mouse working stable at LAN. not a huge CON but not all LANS let u install things.

V3 > deathadder - for this

the wiring still doesnt seem to be fixed like the copperhead (ie. if u rage alot then expect it to cut out and cut back in after about a month

once again any mouse > deathadder -for this

no catridge disc for weight

g5 > deathadder -for this

NOTHING EVER IS A PERFECT 10.

lol #30 give urself a lil hand workout before you play or what :P maybes its from the lotion.

Anyway the 3.0/Deathadder are made for people with smaller hands, mice like mx518 are for people with bigger hands the palm area on those mouses are BIGGER/higher.

This mouse is really accurate you could say its like a 3.0 on steroids because of its similar shape and better engine. I've been using it since it came out no problems yet :)

#16 While I appreciate your constructive feedback to help us improve i.e. "bad review” I will stand behind the fact that I had zero problems with this mouse. It is available at a good price and could provide a great experience for a number of serious gamers. For some reason, I can't stress enough that a mouse is a <b>extremely personal choice with no quantitative method of testing.</b> In terms of price, function, build quality, and performance this mouse had no flaws. Hence a 10. Which to be honest is the same score you can find at many Tier 1 hardware sites. You will see that ExtremeTech gave it a 10 as well as many other, #25, more credible organizations.

#25 I hate to say it, but I have had this mouse for quite some time. It review being published was delayed with many of the things going on around GotFrag. Since I first received this mouse, quite some time ago, I have not installed drivers and it has worked flawlessly. In fact, the only reason I installed drivers and upgraded the firmware was to be able to review said drivers for this review. So I am not sure what you mean by unstable, but I have been gaming with this mouse for months without drivers and it has worked without a hitch.

Even without a weight cartridge, I still believe in the quality of this mouse. However, you raise a good point. Until we are able to have our community submit their own ratings alongside our review, we must take into account what you have to say. Your con on this topic and a rating change has occurred because of it.

As far as any wiring issue, I have noticed no problems whatsoever and I believe it to be fixed.

#26 I have had many Logitech, Microsoft and Razer products. The Razer products have all lasted as long as the other companies. Sorry, but I would have to disagree with you on this.

yeah, #26, i've had this mouse since the first day they were shipped and landed on my porch. other than total preference the mouse was almost flawless. i never expierenced any flimsiness in the frame or in the mouse itself. and from my expierences, the logitech dont last long enough. :x

edit: #37, what are you asking in, "how does it compare"? shape and style? playing?

if you're a logitech user this mouse will feel odd and it will likely be "too small" for someone who has used MX series for a while. if you've not used the logitech series this mouse will probably be less uncomfortable than that of the MX series.

I don't see why everyone hates on Razer / this mouse.. I've used a Copperhead and a Diamondback. And while I use a MX518 they are still pretty good mice there was nothing wrong with them, and it all comes back to personal preference.

I haven't tried out the Deathadder yet, but my friend is ordering one, and will be away for two weeks, so i'll be able to test it out for him, I'll be sure to give my input on it.

To be honest this has been one of the best mice i have ever used. I had the copperhead previous to this and the only problem i had with the copperhead is that it did not fit the hand very well. The deathadder however fixed this and then incorperated the 3g technology which is awsome btw. The only problems that i have had with this mouse is yea #16 if you hold right click and scroll there is some friction, but comon now who really holds down right click and scrolls at the same time? Also there is the mousewheel itself which at one point became squeeky when your scrolled it but then stopped soon after. I read that it was a comon problem and could simply be fixed by spraying it with wd-40. But i found that i didnt even have to do that. Great mouse, great review. I would reccomend this mouse to anyone.

#47 its heavier, by about 30 grams
I have this mouse, and its lying in my drawer.
The material razer builds their mice from, teh smooth plastic becomes a major pain in the behind as soon as ur hand sweats abit. As long as u have dry hands its great, but 1 drop of sweat and you loose the feel of the mouse completely
And as to why its in the drawer - shape doesnt feel right, mainly because, unlike the 3.0, on the DA the right side of the mouse, where the ring finger is isnt perpendicular to the table, but is sloped. So when i have to lift the mouse i feel it kind of slipping from my hand, so when i put it down again i have to readjust grip.
