Antec is a company that, perhaps more than any other, needs no introduction on this site. Their presence in the gaming space is readily apparent from simply browsing the computer help forums at any online gaming community. From cases to power supplies, Antec’s product line suits the needs of gamers like a glove. Whether a gamer is interested in a quiet case or one that provides maximum ventilation, Antec has an enclosure for the job. Antec’s power supplies, including the extremely successful SmartPower 2 series, have received pretty much universal acclaim for their overall value. However, unlike most other companies that have been successful amongst gamers, Antec had never really built products that were targeted directly towards the demographic until very recently. The Nine Hundred, a product we acclaimed for its staggering cooling performance, was the very first (and technically only) product from the company that had the word “Gamer” in either its name or description.

At the 2007 International CES event in Las Vegas, the attending staff of FPS Labs was invited up to a nice suite in the Bellagio. Being fairly familiar with the Antec product line, having reviewed many of these items in the past, we didn’t really expect to see anything overly cool from them at CES. When we saw the Nine Hundred at Digitallife in October of 2006, it was far and away the most radical design we had seen from anything Antec; when we walked into their CES briefing room, it lost that distinction. We reported on what we saw in the Antec briefing room while we were still in Vegas and everything was fresh in our mind. At the time, we really wanted to bring you information – and show you pictures – of a new line of power supplies that Antec was going to bring to market in the near future. After taking some pictures of the unit - we only managed to take a few before being stopped by Antec personnel – we asked whether or not we could post the pictures on the site. According to them, the design and specifications were not yet finalized and thus any publication of the then current features could come back to bite them.

Here we are a good seven months later, and the product is finally on store shelves. The design of the unit appears to be unchanged since we first managed a glimpse, but since we did not record the specifications at the time, we are unsure if those were changed – and frankly we kind of don’t care. What we really cared about was the design (you’ll see why in a bit), and the fact that it remained unchanged may very well be due (at least in part!) to our enthusiastic approval when we first saw it. Now that we’ve got your attention - Presenting the Antec True Power Quattro 850: The Fastest Power Supply in the World.
