FPSLabs Home: Kingston HyperX DDR2 800MHz CAS3 Review

CAS Latency 3?!?! You bet. Kingston comes to FPSLabs with a 2GB kit of RAM that has some of the fastest timings in the industry. How does it perform and compare to higher speed RAM? Let's take a look.

Category: Memory
Manufacturer: Kingston
Product: Kingston HyperX DDR2 800 CAS3

Price: $200

Intro
Kingston has been in the business of producing RAM for around 20 years. In fact they patented the SIMM (single in-line memory module), which is still the standard layout for RAM modules with multiple memory chips on a single PCB. In 2002 they ushered in the HyperX moniker, which stands for their high-performance, top of the line series. And that leads us to the review today today of an impressive set of DDR2 800 Kingston HyperX.

Now the speed may not catch your attention, but the timings surely should at 3-3-3-10. Yes that is CAS latency 3 right there. There are only a few sets of 2GB 800MHz memory kits that hit CAS latency 3, and none of them can touch the 3-3-3-10 stock. According to the Kingston press release 3-3-3 latencies are considered the “holy grail” of memory timings at 800MHz and they are the first to achieve them at stock speeds. An impressive feat when you compare them to other memory sticks on the market and that no one else can boast such timings. The question we are going to ask is just how well do these “ultra low latency” HyperX modules stack up to high bandwidth modules in the age old battle of low timings vs. high speeds.

The Packaging

Kingston goes with the clamshell style packaging similar to other manufacturers. It’s a two piece shell that is held together by the tape-like label with the ram details; model number, serial number, specifications, etc. The RAM fits in nice and secure, and is easy to open and reuse if need be.

Kingston kind of lost its edge awhile back, but it looks like they want to get back in the thick of things. Might have to consider these when I get money for my next system.

I am not big on overclocking so I have stuck with Kingston ram over the last few years. They have always been the most stable for me.

If you were around long you would know my camera was tossed in a pool, and has yet to be replaced. It has nothing to do with focus, its a messed up sensor.

"There are only a few sets of 2GB 800MHz memory kits that hit CAS latency 3, and none of them can touch the 3-3-3-10 stock."

I beg to differ. The Crucial Ballistix are capable of CAS3 timings at DDR2-800.

It seems like every time a memory review is done yall leave out what ICs the chips are using. I would very much like to know this kind of information.

Although Kingston has some great products the ridiculous high price is a total let down. Especially when a kit ~$100 cheaper (crucial ballistix) will perform better.

I said only a few kits can reach cas 3 800mhz. I didnt say none. :) And I dont believe the ballistix can pull 3-3-3-10 either.
